What happened to all those start-ups?
Executive’s Corner: August 2008
By Kelly Olsen • Tahitian Noni International
Recently, our company, Tahitian Noni International, in harmony with the Direct Selling Association (DSA), set out to discover the number of network marketing companies that have begun in the United States in the past 45 years (since 1963). We discovered very quickly that it was impossible to unearth the exact number for a variety of reasons. First, most new start-ups never register on the DSA radar. Second, the mortality rate is so severe – hundreds, if not thousands, of companies were gone before any real evidence of their existence appeared. And third, the private status of nearly all new network marketing companies make it virtually impossible to get true evidence.

That said, together we settled on a very conservative estimate that since 1963, over 60,000 new network marketing companies have been launched in the United States alone. When taken in the context of the rest of the world, that number would probably shock most of us in the industry. This research begs one very obvious question: “Where are they?”
A quick observation of our industry today will demonstrate to us that the number of companies that have reached a high level of continuing sales and longevity is very small. While this may also be mirrored in other kinds of entrepreneurial enterprises, the rate that companies reach a level of continued success seems particularly low in our industry.
